1kg Wendell Estate Unfiltered Raw Honey

Short answer: the packaging. Every jar of Wendell Estate Honey contains only the finest honey our bees produce in the season, packaged fresh by us on the day the honey is spun from the honeycomb (usually the day after bringing the honey in from the beehives). The PET plastic jar used for our 1 kg (2.2lb) jar of unfiltered raw honey reduces the costs compared to our glass jars. Our idea is to give people the most honey for their money with our largest jar. Because we package the honey directly as it comes in from the apiaries and don’t blend or batch it, there may be slight differences between any two jars of Wendell Estate Honey, but we guarantee every jar lives up to our highest standards.

Raw honey ages and degrades gradually at room temperature, decreasing both its health benefits and flavor profile. To preserve its optimal qualities, we recommend that you keep a quantity of raw unfiltered honey that you expect to consume within 2-3 months at room temperature, ensuring a soft and easily spreadable texture. For longer-term storage exceeding 2-3 months, we advise you to store our honey in a sealed container in either the refrigerator (good) or freezer (best). Unlike meat, creamed honey can be frozen and warmed repeatedly without compromising its quality. Because melting our unfiltered raw honey would damage the uniquely smooth texture, it’s best to just let it warm gradually at room temperature (rather than, say, in a microwave). 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) is 48 servings of 1 tablespoon (21g) of raw unfiltered honey. That’s enough for about 48 luscious pieces of toast and honey or 150 cups of tea sweetened with honey. Looking at it from an energy perspective that’s 2,880 calories, or the equivalent of 21 bottles of Gatorade (591ml/20oz; Fruit punch flavor; $3.25/bottle). There are two main differences between 1kg (2.2lbs) of raw unfiltered honey and Gatorade. One is the price: 1kg of raw unfiltered honey is cheaper than 21 bottles of Gatorade. The second is that Gatorade is sweetened with sugar and all its negative health effects, while raw unfiltered honey has health benefits that are almost the opposite of sugar’s harmful effects, including promoting healthy weight loss/maintenance rather than obesity.

One of the most impressive qualities of raw honey is that it never spoils in a way that would cause you harm or illness if you eat it. Though raw honey very slowly degrades and loses health benefits as the enzymes break down at room temperature, as mentioned above, it will not become harmful in any way. Unfiltered raw honey may contain natural yeasts. As the honey absorbs moisture from the air, over weeks to months these yeasts may cause the honey to ferment. Fermented honey can be detected by a “yeasty” odor, and often a frothy appearance. Though many find the taste of fermented honey unpleasant, eating it is completely harmless. You might even use fermented honey to make either mead or a kombucha-like beverage. I should mention that infants less than one year of age should not eat either raw or pasteurized honey.
